Clear spots present on the imaginal head of many Chironomidae have previously been interpreted as vestigial ocelli. Scanning electron microscopy of clear spots in Diamesa tonsa (Haliday) and Protanypus caudatus Edwards indicates, however, that these structures are proprioceptive sensilla.
