Abstract Reactivity for transferrin receptors was studied in 9 cases with benign and 11 cases with malignant lesions of the cervix. Immunostaining reaction for transferrin receptors was positive in 9/11 (81.8%) of the malignant lesions. However, the reactivity was absent (0%) in all of the 9 specimens with benign lesions. The difference in reactivity pattern between benign and malignant lesions was highly remarkable (P< 0.001 Fischer's exact test). Thus the present study denotes that transferrin receptors are associated with active cellular growth (malignant lesions) and virtually absent in the resting tissues (benign lesions).
