Fifty consecutive inpatients referred with the provisional diagnosis of acute cholecystitis were investigated with 99m Tc diethyl IDA scintigraphy within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms. Scintigraphic results were correlated with other radiological investigations, surgery and histopathology, and showed that the nonvisualization of the gallbladder is a highly sensitive (100%) and specific (96.6%) indicator of acute cholecystitis. Other scintigraphic patterns that were observed were often helpful in the elucidation of other hepatobiliary disorders.
