A consecutive series of ioo neurosurgical and 100 orthopaedic patients subjected to surgical treatment for low back pain were analysed. An approximate number of 260 clinical and other data concerning each patient were taken from the authors' private records, independently assessed, and transferred on to computer cards. The results of the analysis are presented
