Summary Specular microscopy of the human corneal endothelium in vivo has become a useful method in qualitative examination. Its role in the quantitative study of the endothelial surface, particularly after intraocular surgery, requires further experimental work. Studies of the methodology and interpretation of the data, together with technical advances in the instruments, indicate excellent potentialities for this new clinical instrument.
