Abstract The basic buoyancy of pupae of C. angularis is controlled by a gaseous space within the cephalothorax which keeps pupae floating vertically. Extension and contraction of the abdomen enables an increase or decrease in abdominal volume, and the consequent changes to the specific gravity of the pupae enable ascent or descent within the water of the tree‐hole. Extension and contraction of the abdomen are controlled by the respiratory requirements of the pupae. Contraction of the abdomen is also part of an escape reaction from the surface of the water.
