ABSTRACT. A low osmolar modular defined formula diet has been successfully used in the treatment of 46 patients for a total treatment time in excess of 15 years. The diet is unique in that each constituent can be varied independently of any other, thus giving maximum flexibility in management. The diet is well tolerated in circumstances when the gastro‐intestinal tract is unable to tolerate other nutrients. Also it will support normal growth and development over lengthy periods. The use of this diet may lessen the need for the more invasive and potentially dangerous technique of parenteral nutrition.
