The pathogenesis of focal nodular hyperplasia is poorly understood. The lesion has been reported adjacent to many other focal hepatic lesions suggesting this is a nonspecific reaction to injury. Recent evidence suggests that arterio‐venous shunt formation may trigger a positive feedback loop that includes hepatocellular hyperplasia.
