A determination of tick population size within an area of migration [ Dermacentor variabilis (Say) (Acari, Ixodidae)]

A method is presented for the estimation of a Dermacentor variabilis tick population size within an area of migration. A coefficient of migration was developed in order to estimate the rate of loss of the marked population from the sample area so that the Lincoln index method could be used to estimate the population size. This method was used to estimate the size of the spring adult cohort during its closed period, the percent survival of the spring ticks into the summer, and the size of the summer adult cohort. Zusammenfassung Bestimmung der Zeckenpopulation in einem Ausbreitungsareal von Dermacentor variabilis (Say) (Acari, Ixodidae) Es wird eine Methode vorgestellt, welche die Bestimmung der Populationsgröße von Dermacentor variabilis in einem Ausbreitungsareal erlaubt. Zur Schätzung der Verlustrate einer markierten Population in einem Sammlungsgebiet wurde ein Migrations‐Koeffizient aufgestellt, mit dessen Hilfe die Lincoln‐Index‐Methode zur Abschätzung der Populationsgröße verwendet werden kann. Es wurde diese Methode angewandt, um a. die Größe der Frühjahrs‐Adulten‐Population während ihrer noch geschlossenen Periode, b. die Frühjahrs‐Sommer‐Überlebensquote und c. die Größe der Sommer‐Adulten‐Population zu bestimmen.
