Abstract Combinations of Nectria coccinea var. farinata (the primary causal agent of beech bark disease), Fusarium oxysporum , and associated bacteria were inoculated into American beech trees at two sites in New Hampshire. Neither F. oxysporum nor bacteria appeared to affect the size of cankers formed. Canker size was significantly related to bark thickness at one site when only one mating type of the pathogen was inoculated alone.
