Experimental measurements have been performed of the air flow in front of scavenging orifices of various dimensions and at various evacuation flows. A design of a close scavenging system for clinical use is proposed. Prototypes of close scavenging systems have been used in adult and paediatric mask anaesthesia. Close scavenging considerably reduces the nitrous oxide concentration in the anaesthetist's breathing zone.
