SUMMARY Methods are described for studies of the pulmonary ventilation, mechanics of breathing and alveolar CO 2 concentration during artificial respirator ventilation during surgical procedures. The characteristic feature of the present measuring system for recording flow and volume was that only the insufflation phase was measured; the gas compressed in the respirator was separated by a valve system from the expired gas, and the zero reset control of the volume integrator was triggered by the respirator after each recorded breath. Calibrations, sources of error and overall accuracy of the measurements are discussed.
