ABSTRACT The flows above ripples of glass beads and ripple models have been visualized in an oscillatory water tunnel. Some ripples were observed to form without flow separation. Two types of vortices, the standing vortices without flow separation and the separation vortices have been observed, and their similarity is discussed.
