An outbreak of dieback on plum trees at the Institute of Horticultural Research, East Mailing, in the summer of 1983 resembled a disease prevalent in Britain earlier this century attributed to Diaporthe perniciosa. Numerous isolates of this fungus were obtained from diseased tissues but an attempt to reproduce the disease by inoculation was unsuccessful. Dieback appeared following exceptionally wet spring weather.
