SUMMARY The squid statocyst had proved difficult to interpret from histological sections and whole mounts. It consists of an enclosed cavity with inward projections. In order to understand the internal structure of this cavity three‐dimensional models were made. Histological sections were specially prepared and the cavity outline and reference marks drawn on to clear plastic sheets. These were cut out and the inner and outer pieces assembled in series to make two sets of shapes. One could be viewed directly, while from the other set plaster casts were made to demonstrate the cavity.
