. This paper reviews the scientific background to the development of new drugs for the treatment of diarrhoeal diseases, and it includes an update of three classes of drugs which may prove useful; gut specific α 2 ‐adrenergic agonists, intestinal Cl − channel blockers, and somatostatin analogues.
