Summary Using enrichment techniques, it was possible to isolate clostridia from marine sediments collected from 10 stations in the North Sea. Of the total number of isolates Clostridium bifermentans constituted 47% and Cl. welchii 21%, while Cl. sordellii constituted 18%. The remainder were unknown species. Evidence of cellulolysis was obtained, but no organism has as yet been isolated. No psychrophilic anaerobes were found.
