A trial of cleansing faecally incontinent patients using non‐ionic detergents was undertaken and compared with traditional cleansing with soap in three hospitals with continuing‐care patients. The results show a reduced cleansing time, and evidence that the marked degree of alkalinity encountered in cleansing with soap is avoided. In addition the trial shows that the skin condition of the cleansed area, and odour control, are improved. There was a greatly reduced need to apply conditioning or barrier creams, and nursing appeal in the procedure was greatly improved.
