ABSTRACT: The role of folate in health and disease has moved beyond prevention of macrocytic anemia. Sub‐optimal folate status is now linked to increased risk for heart disease, certain cancers, impaired cognition, and increased risk for birth defects and complications. Since folate is essential for nucleotide synthesis, homocys‐teine metabolism, and de novo synthesis of S‐adenosylmethionine, aberrations in these pathways may contribute, alone or together, to the disease processes discussed in this paper.
