.1 An analysis of host searching behaviour suggests that female parasitoids respond to aphid odours bringing them to the region of an aphid colony. 2 Syrphid hosts are located within the aphid colony by response to contact chemicals on the larval integument. 3 The behavioural mechanisms used by syrphid larvae to resist attacks and the subsequent responses made by parasitoids are described. 4 Oviposition behaviour and host size preferences of parasitoids are described.
