Summary A total of 6,388 medical in‐patients in two South African hospitals, were examined for pityriasis rotunda. Sixty‐three of 5,800 patients in the rural hospital and two of 588 patients in the urban hospital had pityriasis rotunda. Circumstantial evidence implicates undernutrition as an actiological factor in this acquired ichthyosis.
