SUMMARY Relapsing polychondritis was first described by Jaksch‐Wartenhorst in 1923. The disorder is characterized by recurrent inflammation of the cartilaginous tissue of the ears and nose, and less frequently of the ribs, larynx and tracheal rings, in association with fever, arthropathy, involvement of the eyes and an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and other laboratory abnormalities. Whilst over n o cases have been reported, mostly in the American and European literature, only six case reports have appeared in the British literature (Davies & Kelsall, 1961; Thould, Stansfeld & Balme, 1965; Hewer, 1967; Hughes et al. , 1972). We report a further patient who showed not only the cardinal features of this unusual disease but also some hitherto unreported manifestations.
