SUMMARY. The available diagnostic procedures for malignant melanoma are critically discussed. The hazards of simple excision biopsy can be reduced by the technique of radiation or chemotherapeutic cover. Methods of treatment are reviewed and the 5 year follow‐up results of the treatment of 136 patients in the author's clinic are reported. It is concluded that both radiation and surgery have a place in the treatment of this tumour.
