SUMMARY— The clinical findings of long standing vitamin C deficiency in 7 patients are described. The outstanding features are a curious “woody” oedema of the legs associated with pain and discoloration and severe mental depression. These findings are contrasted with those seen in experimentally induced vitamin C deficiency in man. The difficulties of obtaining an accurate dietary history are emphasised. The suspected diagnosis should be confirmed biochemically.
