The scaling of ruminoreticulum size with body weight in East African ungulates

Summary Data from the literature on the size of the ruminoreticulum of African herbivores is plotted against body weight. Estimates of rumen size vary depending on the method. The technique of estimating rumen size by the weight of contents systematically underestimates the organ size of small animals. The measurement of water‐holding capacity of the ruminoreticulum overestimates the rumen size of small animals. These data suggest that rumen size increased isometrically with body size. RÉSUMEÉ Les données trouvées dans la littérature sur la taille du rumen d'herbivores africains sont corrélées avec le poids du corps. Les estimations de la taille du rumen varient en fonction de la méthode employée. La technique consistant à estimer la taille du rumen d'après le poids du contenu sous‐estime systématiquement la taille de I'organe chez les petits animaux, tandis que la mesure de la capacité de contenance en eau du rumen la surestime. Ces données suggèrent que la taille du rumen augmente en fonction directe avec celle du corps.
