Summary A short field study at Nxai Pan in Botswana showed that bat‐eared foxes ( Otocyon megalotis ) are diurnally active in that area although nocturnal activity could not be excluded. Activity appears to be closely related to availability of insects, particularly termites, which show maximum abundance on the surface of the pan around noon. Analysis of scats shows that termites constitute the main food item of foxes at Nxai Pan. Pairs of bat‐eared foxes do not appear to be territorial and intolerance between pairs was not observed.
