A: Your college majors were physics and philosophy, an unusual combination for a student at a Jesuit school. Why that route? MK: Sputnik, the Russian satellite, went up in about 1957, and that captured the imagination and excitement of my generation. Being good in math, and being from that era, I gravitated towards physics, as did many people. Philosophy as a co-major just somehow happened. I did like it.
