Summary The increased risk of fracture in alcoholics is in part due to their increased risk of trauma, but a generalised skeletal disease may also occur in alcoholics. The exact nature and prevalence of alcohol‐related bone disease is unknown. The pathogenesis is likely to be multifactorial and related to nutritional problems, endocrine and metabolic effects and possible direct effects of alcohol.
