The antibody titer to Pityrosporum orbiculare of 40 patients with pityriasis versicolor was measured using both the sensitized hemagglutinin method and the immunofluorescence antibody technique. Among the patients there was no significant correlation between the antibody titer and the lesional duration, distribution, color, or the presence or absence of the itching. When compared with the antibody titer of 31 healthy volunteers, no significant differences between the groups were found. In 18 out of the 40 patients, biopsy specimens were prepared for light microscopy and direct immunofluorescence microscopy. Acanthosis was observed in 13 specimens but no deposits of immunoglobulin or complement were noted.
