A crack deflection model for two‐dimensional randomly arranged rods has been derived by making an appropriate modification to the model by Faber and Evans. This model predicts more effective toughening in certain directions than that for three‐dimensional randomly arranged rods. The theoretical predictions are compared with experimentally measured fracture toughness data of hot‐pressed whiskerreinforced ceramic‐matrix composites.
