Three‐spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus , from the Chehalis River drainage. Washington, U.S.A., that have lost the mosaic nuptial signal were more likely to be found in tannin stained sub‐drainages whereas those expressing the mosaic nuptial signal were more likely to be found in sub‐drainages that were not tannin stained. This result is consistent with the sensory drive model.
