Although this article is about a work that is also covered in my monograph, the focus here is on theoretical and methodological issues, namely the analysis and criticism of cross-cultural musical representation. In response to the relevant literature, notably the work of Georgina Born, I have developed an analytical approach to and a typology of cross-cultural musical representation based on the thought of Mikhail Bakhtin and Edward Said.
