With the assistance of newly‐developed techniques involving splined regression curves, the direct analysis of dry weight increment in short‐term growth studies has become feasible. It is argued that, given certain mechanical improvements, these might replace some of the more conventional and lengthy types of growth study encountered in agronomy and in physiological plant ecology.
