Summary This paper describes various phenomena observed in experiments in which a number of rock types were subjected to several kilobars of confining pressure and an additional axial loading. The effect of such stressing on the mode of fracture, the velocity of elastic waves and the absorption coefficient of elastic waves are reported. An attempt is made to interpret these results in terms of the pore and crack structure of the rock specimens.
