It is demonstrated that the diffraction properties of a moving crystal lattice can be employed for the production of very cold and ultracold neutrons. The necessary formulation for the calculation of the diffracted neutron intensity is developed. It is shown that such a device is indeed possible and, as a source of ultracold neutrons, constitutes a practical alternative to existing mirror‐reflection neutron turbines.
