Abstract Objectives : To detail the life and achievements of Levi Cooper Lane, MD, author of the first American textbook on surgery of the head and neck. Methods : Literature search and analysis. Results/Conclusions : While some of Lane's observations have been diluted by the passage of time, the lessons imparted by his life and work merit continued study by contemporary head and neck surgeons.
