The objective of this study was to demonstrate that Bcl2 gene expression was dys‐regulated in fetal myocardium from diabetic mothers on days 14 and 17 of gestation. Fifty two female CD1 mice, 6 to eight 8 weeks old were used on these experiments. After a 2 weeks acclimation period, females were divided in three experimental groups: control, diabetic (STZ) and diabetic treated with FCA (STZ + FCA). Results from RT‐PCR showed that Bcl2 expression was decreased for the STZ and STZ + FCA groups at GD14 and 17. Body weight was significantly lower at GD14 fetuses from diabetic litters than in controls. Also, at DG17, there were no significant differences among groups in this parameter. Fetal body length and number of fetuses per litter did not show significant differences among groups. External congenital malformations were found in both groups treated with STZ. At GD 17 there was a reduction of birth defects from 21% in fetuses from diabetic mothers to 15% in fetuses from diabetic mothers treated with FCA.
