The International Symposium “Earth sciences: history, contemporary issues and prospects” was successfully held in Moscow, Russia, on March 28, 2019. The organizer of the symposium was S. I. Vavilov Institute for the History of Science and Technology RAS, Moscow. Today, the research work in IHST RAS is conducted in various fields such as the history of natural sciences, the history of technology and technical sciences, the science of science, and other. Moreover, IHST RAS is one of the leading centers of international cooperation in the field of historical and scientific and historical and technical research work. The key goal of ESHCIP 2019 was to heighten the interest to the issues of the history as well as the current state of Earth sciences. Especial attention was paid to the ecological and environmental issues. Researchers from all across Russia came to the symposium to share the results of their work and discuss the prospects of Earth sciences. The day of the symposium became the day of intense learning and certainly gave all the participants the impetus to further research. More than 90 papers were submitted on geology and geophysics, geoecology, green power engineering, land use and monitoring of lands, cartography and geoinformatics. All the submitted manuscripts were carefully reviewed by the editors and the invited reviewers. The most valuable papers on the topical issues of Earth sciences were selected for publication. We hope that this volume will not only deliver to the readers an overview of the latest research results in Earth sciences, but also give an opportunity to learn more about the Russian academic community of scientists and educators. We would like to express our deep gratitude to the members of the ESHCIP 2019 organizing committee as well as to all the participants. Moreover, we would like to thank the reviewers and editors for their careful work and great contribution to preparing of the ESHCIP 2019 proceedings.
