While it is accepted by most clinicians that denial forms part of the alcoholic's response to his problem and is often shared by his close associates, it is less frequently acknowledged that the same mechanism operates at a societal level. Examples are given of the operation of denial and of minimisation which implicate the health professions, governments and government agencies, the alcohol industry, the media and the international community.
