The enzyme α‐1,4‐glucan lyase (EC 4.2.2.13) was studied in cells of young and mature parts of the red alga Gracilariopsis sp. by using immunogold labeling in ultrastructural studies. In young tissues, the α‐1,4‐glucan lyase was observed at two different sites: around the starch granules in the cytosol and in the stroma of the chloroplast. In mature tissues, the α‐1,4‐glucan lyase was present only in the chloroplasts. The possible role of this starch‐degrading enzyme in red algae is discussed.
