Summary This article aims to review the early indications of diabetes, both ocular and non‐ocular. Epidemiological data is showing an increase in both non‐insulin dependent and insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. It is therefore important that diabetes mellitus is detected early so that regular screening and good metabolic control can be encouraged. Strict glycaemic control is important in order to delay the onset or slow the progression of diabetic complications.
