: Emerging viruses include known viruses that have increased in incidence or geographic range (such as enteroviruses and Japanese encephalitis virus), new viruses associated with known diseases (Australian bat lyssavirus) and new viruses associated with previously unrecognized diseases (Hendra and Nipah viruses).
