The development of nursing research in Germany is described in this article; in the first part, the evolution of nursing research in Europe is discussed briefly, then the development of nursing research in Germany is analysed using the framework of the main stages of the development of nursing research described by Tierney. A comparison of the differences between European and German development follows. Reasons for the differences are briefly analysed and discussed in the context of the German political and social background.
