Summary The idiopathic photodermatoses are the most common cause of photosensitivity and the commonest of these are polymorphic light eruption, actinic prurigo, chronic actinic dermatitis and solar urticaria. The clinical presentation, investigation and treatment of these four disorders are presented. Spontaneous improvement does occur.
