Scotland might be a country of just 5 million people in one of the UK’s remotest corners, but it is no minnow in the medical education pool. Devolution of the UK’s 4 nations – which has seen Scotland gain its own national parliament – has thrust health care and education into the political limelight as never before. A flurry of reviews and initiatives have been commissioned, with the result that, against the backdrop of a centuries-old tradition of doctor training, the nation once again finds itself at the forefront of the progressive innovations influencing medical education around the globe. The key to its international success, say academic leaders, is its willingness to learn from other countries and to share its own accomplishments.
