I am delighted to have been asked to join in the celebrations of Bob Blanden's scientific life. Though I have never formally collaborated with Bob, it has been a pleasure to interact with him on many occasions, and so it was particularly touching to be invited. I have always had a special regard for Bob as a gentleman scientist.
