A report by the U.S. National Academies' National Research Council, issued 31 October, has come out in favor of continuing direct federal funding for several science centers that are part of the Smithsonian Institution, including the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. The report, “Funding Smithsonian Scientific Research,” was requested by the White House Office of Management and Budget. OMB had proposed transferring funds from the centers to the National Science Foundation, and had expressed concerns that the centers' research programs are funded without competition.
