predictor of global cognitive scores (b1⁄4-.266, p<.001, R1⁄414.6). Education (p1⁄4.0.841) and intelligence (p1⁄4.070) were not moderators of the relation. Semantic memory (b1⁄4.011, p<.001, R1⁄469.5) and literacy (b1⁄4.042, p<.001, R1⁄457.7) were moderators and revealed higher variance explained (Table 1). Conclusions: In developing countries, the use of resilience factors for aging based only on schooling years may be misleading. Sociocultural issues influence educational system and achievement, and consequently, affects the use of this simple measure. Literacy and semantic memory were valid moderators. Literacy revealed the quality of the education received, showing that only years of schooling does not reflect actual achievement. The semantic memory moderation model had the best variation explained. This result indicates that knowledge acquired during life may also be a protector factor for aging in this population. The use of crystallized abilities as a resilience factor in aging should be considered when studying populations with sociocultural particularities.
