Abstract 4‐Desmethylsterols from Macoma balthica L. were investigated by gas chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry after isolation by argentation and column chromatography. Twenty‐three Δ 0 ‐ and Δ 5 ‐sterols with saturated and unsaturated side chains were identified. It is suggested that sterols in M. balthica are derived from dietary sources. The great diversity of minor 4‐desmethylsterols is likely to be due to their role as intermediates in the metabolism of dietary sterols.
