Based on a quite general theory for deriving convergence bounds in penalty methods we derive estimations for the influence of penalty and discretization parameters in elliptic differential equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Furthermore, starting from an analysis of Brezzi's condition within the framework of optimization some modification of the penalty technique in linear problems is proposed. This modification leads to an improved convergence.
